Is Google Working For You?

Ah, SEO. The abbreviation for ‘Search Engine Optimization.’ If you’re new to the Internet marketing aspect of life, then you may not have a clue what SEO means to you. Basically, it means that if you have a website, or a blog, or some other Internet-based web page, and you want people to find it so they can visit it, then you will be dealing with SEO.

Search engines like Google or Yahoo have their own formulas for ‘ranking’ web pages and websites from around the world. When you type in a search into Google, for example, say you want to know more about the weather patterns of Georgia, you might enter ‘weather patterns of Georgia’ and you will be directed to thousands of pages of sites that may have precisely what you’re looking for. It is highly unlikely that there will be only one site with this information on it, so the search engines rank them according to relevance, domain names, links, traffic, and other factors.

SEO, or Search Engine Optimization, is all about trying to get your website, or web page, to rank as high as possible based on certain ‘keywords’ entered. The entry we made above is what is known as ‘keywords.’ Keywords are a major component of SEO, though certainly not the only one. When you build a website or compose a blog, you will find an entry column for keywords. These words must be identical in the text of the website or article or blog as they are in the keyword box. Then, the search engines scour your website and use a formula to determine how relevant your site is for those keywords.

With SEO, the target result is to land on the first page of listing on a search engine. Most people when surfing the web through search engines rarely ever click beyond the first page. If they don’t find what they’re looking for they often type in a different combination of keywords. So if your web page or website doesn’t get listed on that first page, it’s almost like it doesn’t exist at all.

Which means that understanding how SEO works and how to optimize it to the fullest extent can be the difference between having people visit your site, buy what you’re selling, and watching your traffic meter remain at zero.

Once upon a time, SEO was all about pumping the keywords into the text as much as possible, even hiding them in the HTML code of the website (which wouldn’t be viewable to visitors), but the search engines have become much more sophisticated and will penalize or even remove your website from any future consideration if it feels that you’re trying to take advantage of the system.

SEO is the vital lifeblood of online businesses and since it is so important to success, it should be taken seriously and handled with professional acuity.
